Hoe kunnen mensen controleren of hun huis inbraakproof is?
“Echt technisch kijken naar de beveiliging is misschien lastig voor de meeste mensen. Ik heb een heleboel tips voor welke technische sloten het best werken, maar dan ben ik misschien een uur bezig. Het beste is eigenlijk om erkende bedrijven naar het technische gedeelte te laten kijken. Deze eerste check is meestal gratis en als je het advies uitvoert is de prijs uiteraard afhankelijk van hoeveel er moet gebeuren om het huis veiliger te maken.”
Is het voorkomen van inbraak dan uiteindelijk niet erg duur voor veel huizen?
“Mensen bepalen uiteindelijk natuurlijk zelf hoe veel ze erin willen investeren. Sommige zullen het genoeg vinden als de voordeur en achterdeur op orde zijn. Ik adviseer meestal om op onze site naar de kosteloze tips te kijken, want ook zonder geld uit te geven is er genoeg te doen ter bescherming. Uiteindelijk draait het namelijk ook veel om je gedrag. Hoeveel sloten er op een huis ook zitten, qua beveiliging blijft de bewoner zelf vaak de zwakste schakel.”
De bewoners zijn de zwakste schakel?
“Ja, je kan hele goede sloten hebben, maar dan moet je ze wel ook echt op slot doen. Een paar jaar geleden had de overheid een actie voor bewustzijn over inbraken. Voor deze campagne was de slogan ‘Maak het ze niet te makkelijk.’ Als je vergeet de deuren of ramen op slot te doen wanneer je van huis gaat, dan is het voor een beetje inbreker heel makkelijk om binnen te komen met een plastic pasje, zelfs bij de best beveiligde nieuwbouwhuizen. Verder moet je het huis er natuurlijk ook bewoond laten uitzien door bijvoorbeeld verlichting aan te laten, zodat inbrekers uit de buurt het minder snel aandurven.”

Komen inbrekers meestal uit de eigen buurt?
“Landelijk hadden we dit jaar tot nu toe 22.000 inbraken. Tachtig procent hiervan werd uitgevoerd door ‘gelegenheidsinbrekers.’ Dit zijn inbrekers die gebruikmaken van de gelegenheid die wordt gegeven door bewoners die hun huis niet veilig genoeg achterlaten. Ze zijn dus niet al lang van plan om in te breken, maar pakken hun kans wanneer je de deur bijvoorbeeld niet goed op slot doet. Over het algemeen zijn dit ook mensen die dicht in de buurt wonen van waar ze inbreken. Hier zijn ze natuurlijk bekend met de straten en de inwoners daarnaast zijn ze weer zo snel mogelijk in hun eigen huis om buit veilig te stellen.”
Wie zijn het dan, de mensen die inbreken?
“Het is natuurlijk niet de bedoeling dat mensen nu paranoia zijn in hun eigen buurt, maar het is gewoon een feit dat een inbreker ook de jongen kan zijn die zijn hond uitlaat in de straat. Ik heb zelf zeventien jaar bij de politie in Rotterdam gewerkt en dan zag je dat het heel vaak, buiten het feit dat ze inbreken, hele normale mensen waren. Sommige doen het voor de kick en andere doen het echt om buit te maken. Maar het kan best zijn dat je soms gewoon een gesprekje hebt met zo iemand.”
Er wordt elk jaar steeds minder ingebroken, zal dit aantal blijven dalen?
“We vermoeden dat het inderdaad wel verder daalt. Die dalende trend is mooi, maar 22.000 inbraken tot nu toe betekent eigenlijk zestig woninginbraken per dag landelijk. Dat is nog steeds heel veel, zeker omdat het voor de slachtoffers een enorm effect heeft op hun privéleven en hun veiligheidsgevoel. Daarom proberen we nog steeds om voorzorgsmaatregelen tegen inbraken zoveel mogelijk aan de man te brengen.”
Het is een landelijk fenomeen dat de afgelopen jaren steeds minder wordt ingebroken. In Rotterdam daalde het aantal woninginbraken in de periode 2012-2022 zelfs van 4500 naar 1150. Marcelino Levering vermoedt dat dit naast betere beveiliging ook misschien komt omdat andere soorten criminaliteit lucratiever zijn geworden zoals drugscriminaliteit en digitale criminaliteit.
